If you're one of the many parents out there relying on baby formula to feed your little one, our HiPP Dutch formulas can be a great option! If you've never heard of this formula before, here's a quick rundown for you; HiPP Dutch is a range of European organic formulas offered for infants and toddlers. These formulas are based on organic skimmed cow's milk and even contain natural probiotic lactic acid cultures originally sourced from real breast milk!
With HiPP Dutch, you can rest assured that your baby is getting a premium product modeled after the inherent benefits of human milk. If your interest is peaked, that's just the beginning. Keep reading to learn all about the benefits of HiPP Dutch and why so many parents and babies love this HiPP formula!
Carbohydrates are an essential energy source for your baby helping to fuel their rapid growth and development. There are many different kinds of carbs approved for use in baby formulas including lactose, starch, maltodextrin, and corn syrup to name a few of the more common ones. Lactose is often regarded as the gold standard for carbohydrates and is actually the predominant source of carbs in breast milk!
Owing to this, HiPP Dutch contains only lactose. But that's not all, the lactose used in this formula is sourced from European organic certified cow's milk! This organic skimmed milk provides the base of the formula which is then enriched with a blend of organic vegetable oils, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, prebiotics, and probiotics.
Wondering what all the hype about prebiotics and probiotics for babies is? Well here's the low down: Prebiotics are fibers that help provide energy to healthy gut bacteria like probiotics to promote good digestive health. If you know babies, then you know just how important good digestion is for their sensitive little tummies; so, any ingredients for good gut health get a gold star in our books!
As per European infant formula regulations, HiPP Dutch also contains DHA or omega-3 fatty acids plus HiPP goes the extra mile to include ARA or omega-6 fatty acids. Although ARA isn't a required ingredient in European infant formulas, it plays an important role alongside DHA in supporting brain development and visual acuity in babies.
Many parents are a fan of HiPP Dutch formula because it's certified European organic. Here are just some of the benefits of choosing this formula:
No genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
HiPP does not use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers
The use of hormones is prohibited
The fat blend in HiPP's formula is made from sustainable and organic sunflower, rapeseed, and palm oil - for an ideal fatty acid spectrum
Organic farming contributes to maintaining biodiversity, soil health, and clean groundwater
If you're already familiar with European organic formulas, you may have come across HiPP German or UK before. This is because HiPP makes different versions of their bestselling Bio Combiotic infant milk formula according to different European countries' regulations and preferences. There is a lot of overlap between each of these country versions but we'll point out the minor differences that might lead you to prefer one over the other!
For starters, let's take a look at what each of the formulas has in common:
Certified European organic
Contains at least 30% lactose
Contains prebiotics (GOS) derived from organic lactose
Contains folate (vitamin B9)
Contains DHA (omega-3 fatty acid) and ARA (omega-6 fatty acid)
Are manufactured in Germany
One of the key elements that set these formulas apart from one another is their use of carbohydrates. While all of them contain lactose, some country versions also allow for the addition of complementary carbohydrates. This is done to help older babies and toddlers to get sufficient energy as their nutritional needs evolve and to enhance the texture of the formula. While all stages of HiPP Dutch and UK are lactose only, HiPP German also includes organic starch in some stages of their formula.
HiPP omits organic whey (a type of milk protein) from their Dutch and UK stage 3, and German stages 1+ and 2+ toddler formulas. Interestingly, whey ratios also change over the course of lactation, and later-stage breast milk also contains less whey protein.
Another big difference between the country versions is their inclusion or omittance of probiotics. HiPP Dutch and German include both pre and probiotics to support gut and digestive health. However, HiPP UK contains only prebiotics. As mentioned above, HiPP's Bio Combiotic infant milk formula all contain folate (vitamin B9), but this nutrient is sourced differently between countries. For example, both the German and Dutch versions use the more easily absorbed Metafolin®, while HiPP UK sticks to the more common folic acid.
There are also more subtle differences between these formulas, for instance, HiPP German and UK both come in recyclable cardboard boxes whereas HiPP Dutch comes in metal cans. Finally, while all of HiPP's Bio Combiotic infant milk formula is produced in Germany, HiPP Dutch is packaged in the Netherlands and HiPP UK is packaged in the United Kingdom. It's worth noting that because the containers come in different sizes, (HiPP Dutch in 800g cans, HiPP UK in 800g boxes, and HiPP German in 600g boxes) they will vary in the amount of prepared formula milk they produce.
Now that you understand how HiPP Dutch compares to the other country versions of HiPP organic formula, let's take a look at the differences between the various stages of HiPP Dutch. In case you're still a newbie to European formula, it comes in different stages to reflect the natural changes in breast milk throughout nursing to best suit babies' changing nutritional needs. Infant formula is for babies 0 - 6 months, follow-on formula is for babies 6+ months to 10+ or 12+ months depending on the brand, and toddler formula is for little tots 12 months and up!
HiPP Dutch Bio Combiotic infant milk formula starts with stage 1. HiPP Dutch stage 1 is an infant formula and is suitable for babies beginning from birth. HiPP Dutch stage 2 on the other hand, is a follow-on formula and thus is suitable for use starting at 6 months once you're baby has begun receiving complementary foods.
HiPP Dutch stage 1 contains nutrients including choline, L-phenylalanine, magnesium sulfate, L-histidine, zinc sulfate, and Mortierella Alpina oil. HiPP Dutch stage 1 also contains magnesium but in the form of magnesium carbonate rather than sulfate. Further, stages 1 and 2 both contain zinc but in stage 1 zinc sulfate is used and in stage 2 zinc oxide is used. To provide a balanced amino acid profile, stage 2 adds L-tyrosine and L-cytosine. Finally, the calorie and fat content are slightly higher in HiPP Dutch stage 2, and the quantities of certain vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids vary slightly.
HiPP Dutch stage 2 is a follow-on formula to be used from 6 months onwards. HiPP Dutch stage 3 is a toddler formula suitable for little ones 12 months and up. HiPP Dutch stage 3 has a reduced calorie and fat content compared to HiPP Dutch stage 2. Stage 3 also varies slightly in the levels of certain vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Importantly, stage 3 does not include the whey protein, L-tyrosine, or L-cystine which are present in stage 2.
